We love RAC. Always have, always will. For those of you who check back here often, you’ll know that we’ve posted many of their tracks—from the Foster the People “Houdini” remix, to the newly released FIRST single “Hollywood” feat. Penguin Prison. Basically, we’re huge fans…and we ain’t embarassed about it either. Let it be known: J(am) of the Day loves the Remix Artist Collective.
For those of you who haven’t heard of RAC yet…wtf. Just kidding—you’re in for a real treat. Founded by André Allen Anjos, the collective (made up of André, Karl, and Andrew) has been remixing music into our lives since 2007.
I had the true privilege of chatting with André himself [pictured above on the left] the other day. Turns out, the guy is not only a phenomenal musician, but quite the friendly chap as well. We’re excited to introduce you to his world. Read on to learn all there is to know about RAC, Entourage soundtracks, Tupac holograms, working with Penguin Prison, and the newest Magician remix:
Where are you from and how did you get interested in music?
I grew up in Portugal—that’s where I was born and raised. For college I moved over here to the U.S. I went to school over near St. Louis, and then somehow later on ended up in Portland, and that’s where I am now. As far as the musical side of things, I really started getting into music when I was like 11 or 12. My parents forced me to take piano lessons, and I absolutely hated it ha. I quit that pretty early on, but later discovered Nirvana and got a guitar…The rest is history, I guess.
For someone from Portugal you don’t have much of an accent, no?
Well my mom is American, so I grew up speaking English at home and Portuguese at school. I’m lucky to be bilingual. I’m getting a little rusty with my Portuguese because I haven’t been there in almost 6-7 years. As soon as I go back, I’m always straight back into it, but you know how it is.
But you live in Portland now…I have to ask — Do you watch Portlandia?
Hahahaha. Yeah, of course. I’ve definitely seen a few episodes—you know, it’s funny. I think I’ve come to the conclusion that it can apply to any city really. You’re going to find people like that anywhere.
